What is a FRCS degree?

One of the most coveted exams for physicians and a prerequisite for becoming a doctor in the UK is the fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (FRCS degree). This means that professional accreditation is required in order to practice surgery in the United Kingdom. You can obtain this post designation by passing the exam in the subspecialty you have chosen and working in it for six years. After obtaining this degree, you will be recognized as a consultant in that particular surgical specialism.

It is awarded on an intercollegiate basis by the four Royal Colleges of Surgeons. The Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, established in 1784, the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Edinburgh, established in 1505, and the Royal College of Surgeons of England are a few examples of these. This basically corresponds to MCH (Super specialization), much like in India.

There are two versions: one for applicants from within the country and one for those from outside.

1.Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE FRCS) (domestic — UK & Ireland)
2.Joint Surgical Colleges’ Fellowship Examinations, or JSCFE FRCS (international)

Eligibility Criteria :

Above all, they need to complete their six-year Bachelor of Science and Medicine (MBBS) degrees. They also need to turn in a logbook and three official recommendations from seniors and peers. After that, they can only apply or sit for the FRCS exam. To be qualified to take the test, candidates need to have completed an organized training program. Training in India is permitted. Candidates who pass the exam can enroll in any of the four Royal colleges that were previously listed.

Importance of Fellowship:

The following list of benefits that the test offers candidates is extensive.

  1. notably raise the candidate’s chances of passing the test.
  2. lessens or completely removes the requirement for living and training in the UK.
  3. eliminates the requirement to pay a substantial amount of money to attend the course in the UK or to prepare for the FRCS Exam.

So, this can be the greatest choice for you if you’re a surgeon hoping to move to the UK or if you want to advance in your career. Don’t wait; get ready right now and become an FRCS fellow!
